I party with Jay

I could write a book about how much I love The Great Gatsby. I read the novel, for the first time, when I was barely eight years old. Of course, I was far too young to understand the themes or to comprehend the content, but I did fall into the twenties. I felt like I was right there in a flapper dress, with a sparkly headband dancing at a Gatsby party. I read it many times over the years. Once I read it with my 11th grade AP English class. And each time I've walked away with something new from the book. It never gets old to me and I doubt it ever will.

The first time I read The Great Gatsby, the movie Titanic had just come out. And like most girls my age, I was head over heals in love with Leo! So naturally Leo became the Jay to my Daisy. When rumors started floating around that Leo had actually been cast as Jay Gatsby in the new movie, I was ecstatic! I'm usually not excited about books turned movies (didn't like the original Gatsby movie all that much) but this time... I was beyond thrilled. I started counting the days until theater release last summer.

The release is here! And I am not disappointed!

I went into the theater expecting to be let down. Yes, I love Leo and he's MY Gatsby, but I reminded myself he may not deliver up to my expectations. The rap music instead of jazz... I'll except it. And they might leave important scenes out... I'm just going to have to accept it for what it is....

But I was WOW'd.

Leo WAS my perfect Jay. His smile. His demeanor. The looks! He had that SAME sparkle of hope in his eyes that I envisioned Jay having. The way he walked, his voice... He was Jay Gatsby. He did not let me down at all. He deserves an Oscar!

My only complaint with the cast is actually Tobey. I guess, he will just always be Spiderman to me. There so many times where he would look up through strands of his hair that had falling in his face and I'd swear I was watching Spiderman 3 when he got turned into the black Spiderman. It was just a bit awkward and threw off the setting to me, BUT that is in no way a reflection of his acting or the casting. He probably is the perfect Nick. I just watch so much Spiderman with my kids, that it's hard for me to see him as anyone else.

The screenplay was the best part to me. I loved that they used so many lines from the book! The story was beautifully told!

Now I did expect more glitz and flash from the guy who created Moulin Rouge, so that was a bit of a let down, but not enough for me to not like the movie.

I thought the movie was marvelous. I've never seen a movie adaptation of a book be so... good before. I was very happy with the movie and will probably see it again and again!

BUT!!! If you did not like the book, you probably won't like the movie. Half the theater was asleep the night I saw Gatsby. I couldn't even get out of my aisle from having to wake people up. I'm not just talking like cat nap dosed off, like deep sleeps, had to shake them. This isn't like most book movies where there's more action and the story moves along quicker... NOT AT ALL like that. Gatsby movie is still a slow drawn out story. Heck I can read the book in about the same amount of time it took to watch the movie, if that's any indication.
